Ketamine is a non-opiate medication that blocks a receptor called NMDA. That receptor is responsible for many chronic pain conditions. Repeated infusions can result in sustained relief. Low-dose ketamine can produce a rapid response and relief of symptoms. Repeating infusions will result in down regulation of the NMDA receptor helping restore normal nerve function. Sustained benefit is often achieved.
Ketamine infusions are provided in a comfortable, controlled environment. All patients are monitored closely and each infusion is optimized for individual patient. Risk is very low though some patients do have side effects, including dysphoria, but these effects are self-limiting. A series of low-dose ketamine infusions can dramatically alter or even eliminate chronic pain. However, there is no guarantee that this treatment will completely eliminate your pain. Ketamine should be considered only if you have the time to complete a customized protocol that may require a number of visits.
